I went through all the fics submitted to the bitesize collection, after putting it off for months. I like reading short fics, but if it's the type of fic I'm looking for, it requires a lot of concentration to read, and if it's not the type of fic I'm looking for, then I have to think of the best way to reject it.
I hate rejecting fics, because I always worry the authors are going to take it as a judgment of the quality of the fic, or of how much I liked it, rather than whether or not it is the correct type of fic.
This time, I decided not to write an explanation justifying each rejection, like I have done before. The author might not even care, or remember that they added the fic to that collection, and they might see the explanation as a critique of the fic.
If I'm lucky, if they do notice, they'll check the FAQ and work out how their fic didn't fit the criteria for themselves.
When it becomes possible for a collection mod to invite fics with the click of a button I might make the collection invitation only. The drawback would be that the collection would reflect my reading pattern too much, but I do read widely, so I don't think that would be a huge issue.

Basically, it's for fanfic of 2000 or fewer words, where every word counts (no filler), and which is bigger on the inside than on the outside.
I have a special fondness for short fic around 1000 words long, because in my experience it's just enough space to have a point and deliver it well, but not have any filler or fluff or pacing and spoon feeding the reader.
I love longer fics that have filler and fluff and pace and spoon feed the reader, they're wonderfully relaxing!
But this kind of fic, is the fic where you have to think to get it, and when you get it it's like having a little revelation. It may only take 15 minutes to read it, but it takes a long time to digest it, and you carry it with you for a while.
Maybe not all the fics in the collection are perfect examples of this, but the chances of finding fic like that in the collection is higher than if you just read random short fics. There are surprisingly many slice of life fics, PWPs, atmospheric vignettes, fics which aren't sure which of many points they want to deliver, or what their point really is, and also, honestly, just pointless meandering drivel of approximately 1000 words.
