Monkey bread

Monkey bread is a pull-apart coffee/dessert cake type thing, made by baking small pieces of white bread dough in a sugar and butter sauce. Some people add cinnamon, nuts or raisins, and, for some strange reason, some people use margarine instead of butter.

Has anyone tried it? Is it sort of like extra gooey cinnamon rolls? I've been on a caramel kick recently, and the youtube videos of that caramelized sauce lovingly clinging to the fluffy sweet buns make my mouth water. But when I think of trying out the recipe, it doesn't really seem worth it compared to just buying a single cinnamon roll in the store.

Sounds like fun, although extra gooey is probably something I should avoid (teeth).

That's too bad. I don't know if monkey bread is difficult to eat? It doesn't look like the kind of sticky, chewy consistency that'll pull out your fillings or loosen your dentures, but it might be the kind of consistency that gets into all the hard to clean places and sticks there.

Oh you are so right about sticky stuff in all the hard-to-clean places. Best to schedule eating it no less than a week before your regular teeth cleaning. (And how often is that? My dentists think it should be twice/year but I think more like once every two.)

Yes, I've had it, but it's not nearly as gooey as I would like my cinnamon rolls to be.

Of course, your recipe may not be the one I've had.

I don't have any specific recipe in mind. I googled monkey bread after hearing it mentioned, and there appears to be many different ways of making it.

Hmmm. I'm not sure if I want it to be gooey? Do you like monkey bread?

It's okay. We had it every so often in my college dining hall (better food than it sounds), but it was always a bit of a let down for me expecting cinnamon rolls, I guess.

It's good, but it's not...as sweet as I anticipated.

LOL, it makes no sense, since I've never been to your college dining hall, but immediately I want monkey bread less :-)

I do eat the cakes and danishes the cafeteria bakes at my uni, but they're kind of bland.

Thank you for telling me about it. I'll probably stick with cinnamon rolls, spare myself both effort and disappointment.

There was an obnoxious reality show on tv at some point, some kind of The next Martha Steward thing. Somebody made these breakfast cinnamon rolls with this white sauce. OMG, it looked so damn good! I get pangs just thinking about it. What I wouldn't do for the recipe. Well, not very much, but I wouldn't mind having it, at any rate.
