See her posts about the distribution of slash/gen/het/other in various fandoms, and about what she, a slasher, has written. Very interesting.

Here are pie charts of my slash/het/gen distribution, and character gender distribution. I've done one for all the fics I've written, and one for the "real" fics (that is, not counting drabbles which were mainly writing exercises) that I've written on my own.

I haven't got my fic tagged by pairing type! I have the tags, but after a while I decided that, actually, separating them by type was weirdly gender-segregated given that I don't approach writing them any differently (except for my inability to get two women into bed. But I TRY!).

Ha! I used the categories in my AO3 account to do the counting for me, very easy. Even so, I managed to overlook one fic. I think that I am aware of what pairing types I read and write, if only because there's been so much discussion of it over the years, and I get angry and defensive every time I'm told slashers are misogynists.

But yes, it's all about the characters and their dynamics, and it's rare that I write a fic where I deliberately set out to deal with a male gender role, as opposed to just writing the characters the way they are. I think that's one reason I always underestimate how much slash I've written.

I've often said I don't write about men, I write about people, and I write about people who are women. My male characters are incidentally men. I may be wrong, and I'm obviously biased, but I don't see the male gender roles as as limited and limiting as the female gender roles. There are more of them, and they're roomier. I tend to find men who are very concerned with projecting masculinity and performing their gender ridiculous and pathetic.
