I can understand that it can be relevant to ask in certain circumstances, like if you're going to help someone out with grammar, style, register, colloquialisms, regionalisms, etc, and you need to know what knowledge you can take for granted - but asking you, with your fluent command of English, it can only be code for "Are you one of us?"
